Culture & Travel Tips

Best Time to Visit

The best time for wildlife viewing is during the dry season from May to October when animals concentrate at water sources. Victoria Falls is most impressive during high water (February-May) but gets very wet from spray. April-May offers a balance of good falls viewing and decent wildlife. The rainy season closes some parks.

Cultural Notes

Zambia has over 70 ethnic groups with the Bemba, Tonga, Chewa, and Lozi being largest. Traditional ceremonies like the Kuomboka (Lozi) are significant cultural events. The country is peaceful with little ethnic tension. Music and dance are important, with the Zamrock genre from the 1970s gaining renewed international interest.

Insider Tips

English is the official language. The Zambian Kwacha is the currency. Victoria Falls is shared with Zimbabwe - the KAZA UniVisa allows visits to both sides. Walking safaris originated in Zambia's South Luangwa. The country has excellent guides and authentic bush experiences. Many camps close during rainy season.
