Safety Tips
Exercise increased caution in Peru. Petty crime, including pickpocketing and bag slashing, occurs in tourist areas and on public transport. Use registered taxis or apps - never hail cabs on the street. Express kidnappings (being forced to withdraw cash) occur - use ATMs inside banks during business hours. Avoid coca-growing regions.

Tipping
Tipping is appreciated in Peru. In restaurants, 10% is standard unless service is included. Tour guides typically receive $10-20 USD per day, porters on treks $5-10 per day. Hotel staff appreciate S/5-10. Tipping in soles is preferred. Round up taxi fares.

Culture & Travel Tips
Best Time to Visit
May-September dry season for highlands and Machu Picchu. December-March for coast. Amazon year-round (expect rain).
Cultural Notes
Peruvians are friendly and proud of their indigenous and Spanish heritage. Greetings involve a kiss on the cheek. Pachamama (Mother Earth) is still revered. Food is central to culture - ceviche, lomo saltado, and guinea pig (cuy) are traditional. Negotiations and transactions may take longer than expected. Respect for ancient sites is important.
Insider Tips
Book Machu Picchu tickets and Inca Trail permits months in advance - they sell out. Spend at least 2-3 days in Cusco acclimatizing before attempting Machu Picchu - altitude sickness is real and debilitating. Coca tea and leaves help with altitude. Peru has three distinct regions (coast, highlands, jungle) each with different weather patterns. Lima's food scene is world-class - don't skip it.
Dress Code
Casual dress fine. Layers for highlands. Rain gear for rainy season.
