Safety Tips

Singapore is one of the safest cities in the world - violent crime is virtually nonexistent, and even petty theft is rare. The main "dangers" are breaking laws: chewing gum, littering, jaywalking, smoking in prohibited areas, and eating/drinking on MRT can all result in significant fines. Drug offenses carry mandatory death penalty.

Cards & ATMs

Cards accepted everywhere. Hawker centers increasingly cashless.

Tipping

Tipping is not customary or expected in Singapore. Most restaurants add a 10% service charge plus 7% GST. Leaving additional tips is unnecessary and sometimes declined. Hotel porters may receive S$2-5, but it's not required. Taxi drivers don't expect tips - the metered fare is what you pay.

Mobile/SIM Buy a tourist SIM at Changi Airport from Singtel, StarHub, or M1. Tourist cards cost S$15-50 for 7-30 days with generous data. Registration with passport is quick. Coverage and speeds are excellent throughout this small island nation. Many cafes and public spaces offer free WiFi. eSIMs from international providers also work well.

Getting There

Main Airports

  • Singapore SIN

Airport Transfers

Changi Airport: MRT to city (S$2-3, 30-40 minutes) - follow signs to station in basement. Taxis use meter - approximately S$25-40 to most hotels (20-30 minutes). Grab available from arrivals. Changi is consistently ranked world's best airport - arrive early to explore or eat.

Local Transport

Singapore's MRT is excellent - clean, efficient, and covers everywhere tourists go. Buses fill the gaps. Buy an EZ-Link card (S$12, includes $7 credit) or use contactless payment. Grab works but MRT is often faster due to traffic. Taxis are metered and reliable. The city is also very walkable, though humidity can be intense.

Culture & Travel Tips

Best Time to Visit

Year-round, tropical climate. November-January slightly cooler and rainier.

Cultural Notes

Singapore is a multicultural society of Chinese (74%), Malay, and Indian communities, each maintaining distinct traditions and cuisines. Four official languages reflect this diversity. Efficiency and rules are cultural values - queuing is sacred, and "kiasu" (fear of missing out) drives competitive behavior. Despite strict laws, Singaporeans are welcoming and helpful to tourists.

Insider Tips

Singapore is expensive but incredibly efficient - budget by eating at hawker centers (world-class food for $3-5) and using public transport. Chewing gum is banned and cannot be imported. Don't jaywalk or litter - fines are substantial and enforced. Book Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay tickets online to save time. Air conditioning is intense - carry a light jacket.

Dress Code

Smart casual. Very casual fine most places.
